ORGANISE UNI.LU

Our Manifesto

Dear Unilu students, academics, administrative staff members, and members of the public,

Many of you may be aware of the scandals surrounding Unilu. For those not yet aware, we have attached the following links:

We, a concerned group of students and academics, want to propose something wholly different. Whereas students, academics, and administrative staff members often only had recourse within internal procedures (staff/student delegation, the university's procedures, or our one outside recourse: the ombuds) controlled/influenced by the rectorate and its associates, we want to suggest something that cannot be manipulated by the rectorate — something that we hold power over: A student, academics, and admin led organisation. Students, academics, and administrative staff have seen abuse under this rectorate, and if we wish to hold them accountable, we need a body that is independent from the rectorate and that can maintain the rights of those downtrodden over any abuse of power.

Our power comes from our solidarity as we share the same reality within the university. Many students, academics, and administrative staff members have been reprimanded, pushed out, or thrown out for not being in step with the rectorate. Many of us have had to make choices due to being pressured by the rectorate to leave which, in turn, puts our future, our families well-being, and/or our careers at risk. We need to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity to protect our working and learning conditions. And so, today, we propose to you a student, academics, and admin led organisation — an independent entity that allows us to stand together to carry the load of the many abuses and demand fairness & justice for our members.

For now, we ask that you join our anonymous Telegram announcement channel. From there, we will disseminate organisational information. The history of reprimands means we need to guarantee anonymity for students, academics, and admin alike. We encourage you to share the QR code with your colleagues.

It is time for us to come together to demand change. We need to organise ourselves into a body that can hold the rectorate and its associates to account for the betterment of the University and Luxembourg.

For far too long, the rectorate has benefited from the divided nature of our issues but we have to realise that by coming together we can demand that they address them all. Up till now, the rectorate has put all our individualised cases through a complex battery of administrative red tape (all while these issues were often of the university's own making) right in the middle of our studies, research, and/or teaching, leading to each of us often having to give up on the case or even give up on our studies, research, and/or teaching — all to their benefit. Now, we can come together and create change through unity. We can create an organisation where we can share the load across students, academics, and the staff members to ensure the university meets its promises and fulfils our needs.

This is why we are asking you to join one organisation with full transparency for the Luxembourgish public.

We want to start organising and mobilising to ensure the rectorate meets housing living standards and the needs of students, academics, and administrative staff. We also want to see an administrative process that is fair and transparent, and to have the means to achieve the academic excellence that reflects the potential the students, academics, and admin bring to the university each and every single day. The University of Luxembourg has the capacity to become a truly leading university.

Let's make it happen.
